The most advanced quantum computer ever built threatens to usurp regular computing.
Researchers from IBM have built a quantum computer that uses 50 quantum bits, or qubits, to process information. It’s a seminal moment for quantum computing: that number of qubits has long been thought to give a device the ability to perform some calculations that are extremely difficult—in fact, almost impossible—using regular computers. But, as our Will Knight explains, the record-breaking device doesn’t necessarily guarantee the leap in computation that you may be hoping for.
